Fred Bock Institute of Music Newsletter May/June 2007

Dear Grace,

End of the School Year Thoughts:

There is a large bronze sculpture of Christ being crucified sitting within eyeshot of my office window.  Since it also is situated in a prominent traffic area on the Fuller campus, it is interesting to see the many responses of people who pass by the sculpture, or just pass by.  I was struck by one response today as students were preparing for baccalaureate service.  A young man in his graduation cap and gown walked to the sculpture, removed his cap, and bowed down on the concrete for 30 seconds or so.  I imagine there were lots of thoughts passing through the head and heart of that man as he prepares to leave here and go on to life in ministry.  I wish I could have heard all the things he was saying to God for those moments!  All the Greek and Hebrew exams, dealing with big words like Exegesis and Hermeneutics - they're all past!  It did remind me of why we are on this campus - to assist God in placing His head and heart into that young man and others like him.  May we do that well, and may God bless all whose lives we touch!

We had a great day installing Todd Johnson as the Brehm Chair for Worship, Theology, and the Arts on May 22.  A part of that event was having the opportunity to connect with Bill and Dee Brehm, and their daughter, Lisa Ellis. They are delightful and supportive people.  I know we were all grateful that they could be here for the important installation event.  Bill was also one of the speakers at the groundbreaking for the new David Allan Hubbard Library expansion project that will start making some noise on the campus this coming summer.  It will be a BIG project.  The building will not only be three stories tall, but also two stories underground.  A lot of dirt will be moving around here!

One of the reasons that this is a May/June issue is that I was waiting on a couple of things to report that I knew were developing in the last few weeks.  You'll see those reports in separate articles, and no doubt sense my excitement about them both - and you'll sense that there's a LOT of work ahead for the Fred Bock Institute of Music.  Pray hard!

Blessings to you,

Ed

New Degree Program! WTA-WMM!

instruments

A new degree concentration in Worship, Theology, and the Arts has been approved by the Fuller Seminary board.  The new concentration will be called Worship and Music Ministry.  It will be an option for both M.A. and M. Div. students.  The degree will be focused on those who have foundational skills in musical training and are planning to pursue positions leading worship ministries in churches and parachurch organizations.  The unique focal point of the degree program is to provide leadership experiences as the students learn.  They will also hone their musical understanding and skills, study in a cohort setting where several students are involved in the degree program together, and have an opportunity for continual mentoring throughout their program.  Since it is a Theology degree, the content on that side of the program will be the same strength as in comparable programs.  We're excited to reach a new kind of student who will go into our ministries with a solid set of skills and strong foundations from which to equip and lead people into God's presence.

Chapel Arts Internships!
nate, travis, justin

Under the Brehm Center/Fred Bock Institute of Music umbrella we will be offering students an opportunity to be centrally involved in planning and leading Fuller's All-Seminary Chapel services in 2007/2008.  Students who are interested in this unique "on-the-job" experience are now being interviewed for the openings available.  Ed Willmington will serve as the Chapel Arts Coordinator for these students.  There will a long list of areas that the interns will experience as a part of this special program.  Among those areas are: pastoral understanding, reflecting on the intersection of theology and worship, worship planning resources, sound and technical skills, and organizational abilities.  Pray for these interns as they are chosen to be God's right choices for guiding the Fuller community into His presence.
