WTA Master's Thesis Project
In Light of: An Ecclesiastical Sitcom
Project Summary: Ecclesiastes is a dangerous book in the Bible. Written directly out of the author's personal experience and observation, Quoheleth recognizes that life does not always turn out the way the ancient wisdom writers portray it to work. There is a dichotomy to life that often leaves us with more questions than answers. The book portrays some apparent and difficult realities of the world, such as the good dying young, death acting as a great leveler, the meaningless of work, and chance seeming to direct us all. At the same time however, Ecclesiastes is willing to say that it is indeed God's world, life is still worth living, and we must look for the joy in it whenever possible.
This project works to bring the writings in Ecclesiastes to life through the art of a television sitcom. Much like the book of Ecclesiastes, the sitcom In Light Of uses personal experiences and observations to work towards a higher truth in the midst of often overwhelming and depressing circumstances. It is a study in dichotomies. There is both high and low brow humor, chance and choice, life and death, and laughter and tears that work together to show that life is precious and we must look for the beauty in it all.
