Rise Up & Sing!
By Andrea Bressler on January 27, 2011

One of the books I’ve been reading lately is “Rise Up & Sing” by Lex Buckley.  It’s a book geared specifically for women in worship ministry.  There are also contributions from Beth Redman, Christy Nockels, and Kathryn Scott.  If you are a woman involved with worship, I highly recommend that you read this one!  It’s packed full of practical tips and passionate, inspiring thoughts from Lex and her ministry experience.

One of the things I was so excited to read about was Lex’s passion for healing and transformation through worship.  Many of the songs she writes incorporate this whole concept of healing.  I also have this passion and believe worship has great power to bring deliverance, restoration, and freedom for the captives.

Lex is also affiliated with a website called Female Worship Leader.  There, you can join in the conversation and also find some really great resources.  When I visited the site, I found this blog post from worship leader Cindy Rethmeier: Comparison is Deadly.  As a woman, it can be incredibly easy to compare ourselves with others.  Unfortunately, this can lead to insecurity, bitterness, jealousy, or pride.  I wanted to share this because I think it is so relevant in ministry – especially with worship and the arts.

After reading Cindy’s thoughts, I’m encouraged to continually look up (not horizontally) for affirmation.  Let’s fix our eyes on Jesus and find our security in Him!

“Let us throw off everything that hinders and the sin that so easily entangles, and let us run with perseverance the race marked out for us.  Let us fix our eyes on Jesus, the Author and Perfector of our faith.” – Hebrews 12:1b-2a

How about you?

Have you encountered any setbacks as a woman involved in worship ministry?  Do you ever struggle with comparing yourself with others in worship or ministry?
