The Man Who Wasn’t There
By Elijah Davidson on June 23, 2011

The Man Who Wasn't There is a stereotypically quirky, alt-film noir movie from the Coen brothers. Starring Billy Bob Thornton as a dour faced barber, the film is about his misguided attempt to con his wife's employer out of $10000 in an attempt to get ahead in the world. Like other Coen brother movies and like other film noirs, everything soon gets too complicated for the barber to handle.

I really enjoyed this film. It was perhaps a bit too long, but it was shot interestingly enough to keep me watching. I wanted to see what happened to the barber, but most importantly, I wanted to see (with my eyes) what happened to the barber. It's a beautifully shot movie.

Questions this movie left me with - What part does fate play in justice? If everyone is corrupt, is there any reason to be good? What should we do when we get in over our heads in life and seem to have no one trustworthy to turn to?
