Jubal's Jottings - a Blog of the Fred Bock Institute of Music

Jubal House Combo
Welcome to Jubal House Publications!

I suppose the first question to answer is, "Who or what is Jubal?" Here's the answer. In the Old Testament book of Genesis we find a reference in Chapter 4 to "...Jubal, the first musician - the inventor of the harp and flute." (NLT) In recorded biblical history, Jubal is the first musician! So then, Jubal House Publications is named after our early ancestor who initiated this great art that many enjoy and use as a tool for worshiping God - the art of music.

Beyond that, Jubal House Publications carries with it a strong desire to encourage creativity in worship and to share resources for use in worship ministry. Creativity is a great need in our 21st century world of worship. Fresh avenues and methods of connecting congregants with a great and creative God are always needed inside and outside of the church. Our hope and sincere prayer is that you will both find something useful in these resources, and also be provided with inspiration for creativity inside the worship world in which you have been placed.

Don't you think Jubal would be amazed at what his harp and flute invention began? And, by the way, Jubal has some opinions from time to time about music and worship. You can find out some of his thoughts at www.JubalsJottings.com.

Wishing God's creative blessing on you!Worship ministry walks a tight line between sensitivity to the culture in which it exists and being counter-cultural to the world around it. We recommend three books that address the church/culture issue from a unique perspective.

unchristian coverUnChristian is a book that is statistic driven. Through surveys, the book traces the ideologies of a "new generation" and what they "really think about Christianity." As the author, David Kinnaman, details the findings, he also makes a case for why the statistical discoveries matter to those who are leading ministry endeavors in the 21st century. In the style of Barna research, the book is very insightful in a very objective manner. Ministries may not want to hear all of the findings, but should definitely take a study like this and see how it should influence ministry decisions.

IT coverIt: How Churches and Leaders Can Get it and Keep it. Craig Groeschel pastors one of the largest churches in the U.S. In this book he defines qualities of ministries that have what he calls it. Once defining those qualities, he moves on to prescribe ways in which ministry leaders can take steps to insure that they can continue to have those characteristics of ministry for the long haul.

branding faith coverBranding Faith is a book that reflects what might be more readily seen in the Management or Leadership section of your local bookstore - not in the religion section. Author Phil Cooke has much experience working and dealing with culture and media. He explains how churches and other nonprofit organizations have a choice as to whether or not they will succumb to or influence the culture around them. He lays out elements of branding ministries and follows that with the imperatives that he feels should mark churches that desire to impact their culture.
