Visual Faith

Sacred Imagery in Los Angeles' Congregations 2004-2007

A study in the way visual imagery has been used in worship.

SensesoftheSoul The project "Sacred Imagery in Los Angeles Congregations" will study the visual environment of congregations in Los Angeles, specifically the murals, images, architectural space, and ceremonial practices that express and inform the faith of these congregations. It will focus, in particular, on a cross-section of Catholic, Protestant, and Orthodox congregations that represent both the large immigrant population of Southern California and the Anglo minority. The research will focus on the differing role of the visual in the worship and spirituality of these congregations. The comparative study will be based on background studies of the traditions represented, with respect to the visual, to determine how, and in what way, these traditions are being transformed or altered in the dynamic pluralistic setting of Southern California.
